There’s never a dull moment in the career of Keith Olbermann. Nor many comfortable ones. The TV anchor who gained national prominence at ESPN has managed to impress viewers with his writing skill and strong opinions while at the same time burning bridges with employers on a regular basis.
Olbermann left ESPN in 1997, when the network chose not to renew his contract (“I understand our long national nightmare is over,” one employee remarked on hearing the news). By then the rancor was considerable, as detailed in the great book about the network, ESPN: Those Guys Have all the Fun.
Olbermann moved to MSNBC — then to Fox News, of all places — and then back to MSNBC in 2003, where he stayed and grew a following for his show, Countdown, until again alienating his bosses and leaving in January, 2011. That led to his most current gig with the much less glamorous Current TV, where he was just fired. This e-mail trail uncovered by Daily Beast explains some of the disagreements.
