Did you see those 60-something people holding up signs that said “I’m 17″ on the Today show this morning? Me too.
Not only did it make me laugh, it reminded me I still don’t know why we need a Leap Day every four years. I mean, the calendar is so out of whack we need 24 hours to straighten it out?
But wait a minute. This Christian Science Monitor story says it’s not just a matter of that: “If the year is evenly divisible by four, add a day to February – unless you can divide the year evenly by 100, then no leap day, unless the year is evenly divisible by 400, then you add a leap day.”
Got that?
And it could be worse, the story notes: ”If Julius Caesar hadn’t reformed the old Roman calendar, we might still be adding a month to the calendar every two or three years. ”
